As you can see from the picture of the sign above left, the Lower East Side is known as the Bargain District. This is where you'll find stores specializing in $10.00 items, luggage stores, clothes and kitchen wares.
Between 1870 to 1920 hundreds of synagogues were established along with Yiddish newspapers and theaters. Many famous Jewish entertainers lived in this area including The Marx Brothers, George and Ira Gershwin, Eddie Canter and Jimmy Durante. Today you'll find a large Hispanic - Puerto Rican and Dominican population. The Jewish market on nearby Orchard Street is still around although drastically changed in the last few years.
