Chinatown is one of the busiest and most colorful neighborhoods in New York City. Chinatown probably has more street vendors than any other area of the city. Chinatown is located between Soho, Tribeca and within a mile of Battery Park City where the World Trade Center once stood.
The people of Chinatown certainly saw the terrorist attack of September 11th. They had to witnesses the horror and then their businesses were closed many days after the tragedy. Canal Street is a major artery for traffic in and out of the Holland Tunnel. Today Canal Street is reopened for business and the vendors are back!
Top right you see Centre Street and Canal Streets in Chinatown and the average sidewalk traffic during the day.
Center right picture you see Canal Street a couple of days after the disaster. Pedestrians had to pass through check points by the FBI, Army National Guard and NYPD to get to their homes or businesses.
Bottom right picture you see a Chinese lady with her T-shirt sales on Canal Street. Most of the vendors don't speak English but everyone here understands the word "dollar". Click here for the next page on today's photo tour.
