Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Monday May 23rd 2005
"We'll have two more Diet Cokes," Starlene told the waitress as she sat beside her sister Tiffany in a booth at the Washington Square Diner.
"What did Amanda say? Did she say she was going to tell Skeeter that she saw Jake leaving my apartment last night?" Tiffany asked clearly worried.
"Don't worry about it Tiffany."
"What did she say Starlene?"
"She said she was going to tell him."
"I knew it. I just knew it! I'm in trouble now," Tiffany said wringing her hands.
"No, calm down. I paid her off."
"You what?"
"She's on the take. Skeeter was paying her to watch you and I just paid her more," Starlene said.
"Oh my gosh! I don't know what to think. That's horrible that Skeeter is paying her to watch me! I knew he was suspicious that I like Jake."
"I don't think Amanda will tell him."
"Think? Think? That isn't good enough. You know what I'm dealing with here. Skeeter will kill me and Jake both if he finds out Jake was in my apartment."
"I told you that I paid her off."
"How do you know it was enough?"
"Because it was a lot of money."
"I can't believe it… Amanda is taking your money too," Tiffany said shaking her head as the waitress put two Cokes on the end of their booth as she walked past.
"Well, there's good news too," Starlene said.
"What?"
"Skeeter isn't coming back for a few days at least," Starlene said grinning.
"So what? What good does that do me?"
"Come on Tiffany. I've already paid Amanda off. You've got some time before Skeeter comes back from Atlanta. You've got to take advantage of the situation," she said referring to Tiffany's desire to woo her boss Jake.
"No. I tried your idea Starlene and look where it got me," Tiffany said as she pealed the white paper from her straw.
"You sure do give up easy."
"Starlene Jake isn't interested in me. I tried. I can't just throw myself on him. Besides he's already fixed my computer. I don't have any reason to ask him to come back over," she said before taking a sip of her Coke.
"You could make him dinner for all the trouble he's been to with your new computer," Starlene suggested.
"No."
"Maybe your computer could do something weird and you have to get him back over there."
"I don't know," Tiffany said as if she were considering the last suggestion.
"I would. I know I would. You know Nina is always around," Starlene said referring to the leggy model that was a very close friend of Jake's.
"Yeah, you're right," Tiffany said clearly weighing the situation heavily.
"You've got to move now Tiffany. If Nina gets him in the sack, then that's it. You won't have a chance with Jake."
"Well, what can I do?"
"I have an idea," Starlene said grinning as she leaned forward to whisper so that the men at the next booth couldn't hear her new scheme.
