Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday April 21st 2005 Jake tried to keep his eyes focused on the menu at Trattoria Spaghetto Restaurant on Bleecker Street. His attention was distracted by Tiffany's telephone conversation as she talked to her sister Starlene on her cell phone. "Did Stanley take care of the problem?" Tiffany whispered referring to Starlene's husband, the wealthy real estate broker. "Yeah, he said to tell you the eviction notice is all taken care of. He talked to the people that manage your building and it's all straightened out," Starlene said as she leaned back on the sofa in her Upper East Side mansion. "You mean I'm not being evicted?" Tiffany whispered. She noticed that Jake pretended to be engrossed in the menu and barely looked up when she said the word 'evicted.'" "No. Matter of fact. Well, I shouldn't tell you," Starlene said as she struggled not to tell her sister about her husband's surprise. "What? Is there something wrong?" Tiffany asked as she glanced up and her eyes met Jake's. She smiled and nodded as if to say everything is okay. He looked back down at the menu. "I shouldn't tell you, but I can't help it. Stanley paid your rent for the next six months too," she said unable to hide her excitement. "Oh that's wonderful!" Tiffany whispered. "He shouldn't have." "It was nothing. He said you have enough on your mind. Besides after living with those strippers you really deserved at break," Starlene said referring to the dancers that had recently moved out of Tiffany's apartment. "I can't wait to thank him." "Tell me about Jake? Did he offer you a job?" "Not now," Tiffany said hoping Starlene would read through her coded message that she couldn't talk. "I know you can't talk. But I have to know. Just kinda cough two times if you think you're in love," she said. Tiffany quickly cleared her throat two times, then giggled. "Okay! I knew it. I'll let you go. Call me the minute you get home." "Will do. Thanks Starlene," Tiffany said closing her cell phone. "Sorry. That was my sister," she said when Jake's eyes met hers. "Is everything okay?" he asked genuinely concerned after the conversation that he had just overheard. "Oh yeah. My sister's husband was helping me with a misunderstanding. It's all cleared up now," she said hoping he hadn't overheard too much. "That's great that you have a sister close by." "It's wonderful." "You aren't from New York though. I hear an accent." "No, I'm from Lillard, Georgia," she said feeling her face redden when she heard the accent in her own speech. "It's so refreshing. It's wonderful in New York to hear an accent and see a pretty smile like yours." "Oh thank you." "I think you'd enjoy working in my company," he said grinning as he watched the expression on her face as she listened to his words. "Tell me all about it," she said smiling. "I own a casting agency. I need a receptionist for my new office," he said as he imagined her pretty face greeting his clients when they opened the doors of his new office in the Empire State Building. CONTINUED TOMORROW.
