Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Wednesday February 9th 2005 Ilona opened the door to Jan's Upper East Side mansion. "Come in. Miss Jan not home yet," the housekeeper said in her broken English. "Oh, I'm a little early," Starlene said in her southern accent as she walked into the living room and took off her mink coat. "I take for you," Ilona said as she closed the front door and hung the fur in the coat closet. "This is a nice place Jan has," Starlene said walking around the living room and eyeing the expensive furnishing. "Miss Jan have good taste, no?" Ilona said smiling as she followed Starlene into the living room. "Yes, she does. I'm a little early, I hope that's okay?" Starlene said taking a seat on the sofa. "No problem. I have lunch ready when Miss Jan comes," Ilona said taking a seat in a chair nearby. "So you've worked for Jan for a long time," Starlene said hoping the small talk would lead to some big answers. "Yes, I work for Miss Jan many year. I go through much with her over time," Ilona said as she thought back to the good and bad times. "You were her housekeeper when my ex-brother-in-law Skeeter was married to her," Starlene said. "Oh yes! I miss Mr. Skeeter much. I hope they marry again one day," Ilona said remembering how attracted she was to the handsome southerner. "Oh! Does Jan see Skeeter these days?" Starlene asked careful not to allow the housekeeper to see how shocked she was by her comment. "She tells me that one day she think it work for them," Ilona said. "Oh I didn't know that. They're divorced though." "This be paper. Only paper divorce is. Love in heart," she said touching her heavy bosom. "I see." "You happy to marry Jan's Papa Stanley?" "Oh yes. Stanley and I are happy." "Excuse me if I say…" she hesitated. "What?" "You young for to be Mr. Morgan's bride," she said grinning. "Yeah, I'm much younger than Stan." "He love you much." "You can tell?" "Yes after many years I see Mr. Morgan. He happy now." "I guess you know a lot about the family and how they operate don't you?" Starlene said hedging around the issues. "Oh yes. I see, hear everything that happen." "Do Jan and Mr. Morgan talk often?" "More than before. After he marry you they talk much more. This is good thing that you make them close," she said holding up two fingers close together to illustrate the family unity. "I guess," Starlene said. "What do they talk about?" "Oh business, business. Always business for Morgan family." "I see. What kind of business?" "Oh property. They have much property they talk over. You know how you say... real estate." "So they talk about real estate a lot?" Starlene asked pleased she had guided the conversation to the topic of her interest. "Oh yes, everyday she meet with Mr. Morgan at his office to talk over estate." "Estate or real estate?" Starlene asked nervously awaiting the all-important answer. CONTINUED TOMORROW.
