Let's go over to the Diamond District and you can pick out a big diamond ring at my friend's store," Vinny said as he gave his red Ferrari some gas and it shot out into the traffic in Midtown. "You mean like an engagement ring?" she asked as she held on to her wedding gown on her lap as the skirt draped over the window blew in the wind. "Yeah, like a big diamond ring," he said glancing towards her quickly as a taxicab cut him off in the traffic. "Like for us to get married?" "Well yeah. We could tie the knot today," he said turning to look at her after displaying his finger to the cab driver that had cut him off. "I don't know Vinny," she said grinning broadly. "Well I know. I know I've never felt like this before. You would never want for anything Starlene. You'd be my princess for the rest of your life." "What about your job?" she said referring to his job working with a Mafia boss in Florida. "Look honey. Everybody's got to work," he said in his thick Brooklyn accent. "Yeah, but you know. I worry about what could happen to me with your line of work," she said wondering if the rumors were true. "My work wouldn't be no problem to you." "It's real dangerous though. Isn't it?" "Dangerous? You worried about dangerous? Riding in this car is dangerous. More dangerous than a day's work for me," he said hitting the gas as he sped around a New York Sightseeing Tour bus. "I guess there's some truth to that," she confessed. "But what about if you have to do something bad?" "Did you ever ask Stanley if he does bad things?" "No." "Did you talk to him about his work?" "No." "Why not?" "It's not the kind of thing I know anything about and I'm not interested in stuff like that," she said thinking about the wealthy older businessman. "Well, it's the same with me. You wouldn't know anything about my work and it wouldn't be very interesting to you either." "Do you hurt people?" she dared to ask. "No more than other business people hurt other people. Remember the Enron stuff?" "Yeah. I think I remember hearing something about that." "Business men just using their muscle to take money from some poor unsuspecting mamma's and papa's. At least in my business it's professional. If I take money they know I'm coming for it," he said with pride. "Yeah, I guess you're right Vinny," she said noticing the glare of the gold chain on his neck in the bright sunshine. "What you say Starlene? See that store over there?" he said as he pulled up to a parking space on Sixth Avenue. "Yeah," she said noticing the jewelry store on the corner. "Let me buy you a ring," he said turning off the ignition in the car. "You really want to?" she asked glancing down at the wedding gown on her lap. "Yeah, I want to. Come on let's go look and see if you can find something you like," he said opening the door to the driver's side and getting out. Starlene glanced down at the wedding gown on her lap and remembered how long it had hung in her closet waiting for Stanley to agree to set a wedding date. CONTINUED TOMORROW. MORE SOAP PHOTOS BELOW.
