2 tablespoons butter
1 cup minced onion
1 large garlic clove, minced
1/2 cup tomato ketchup or chili sauce or half and half
Grated rind of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2/3 cup water
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard or to taste
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
Dash Tabasco
1 to 2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 pounds meaty spareribs

Combine all ingredients except the spareribs in a heavy saucepan.  Bring to boiling point, lower heat, and simmer without a cover for about 5 minutes or covered for 10 minutes.  Trim all excess fat from spareribs. Cool sauce a little before using. Place the spareribs in a baking pan and cover with the sauce. Cook in a preheated moderate oven (350 degrees) for about 2 hours, basting occasionally with pan liquid.  Serve hot or cold. Serves 4 to 6.
