4 cups milk
1 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla
Vanilla wafer cookies
3 to 4 ripe bananas

Heat the milk, one half cup of the sugar and the salt in the top of a double boiler.  Beat the egg yolks slightly, mix in a little hot milk and return all to the double boiler. Heat, stirring, until custard coats the back of the spoon.  Remove from the heat and place in a pan of cold water and stir custard as it cools. Stir in the vanilla. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  In the bottom of a greased 2 quart baking dish, put a layer of vanilla wafers.  Slice over them a layer of bananas and add some of the custard.  Repeat until dish is three quarters full.  Beat the egg whites until stiff and gradually beat in the remaining sugar. Spread the meringue on top of the pudding and bake 12 minutes, or until meringue is lightly browned. Cool and chill. Banana Pudding serves 6.
