2 cups thinly sliced, peeled and cored apples
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 1/2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
1 egg, well beaten

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Arrange the apples in the bottom of a greased 8 inch square baking pan. Combine the brown sugar, almond extract, cinnamon and nutmeg and sprinkle over apples.  Place pan in oven. Sift together the flour, baking powder, one tablespoon of granulated sugar and the salt. With your finger tips or a pastry blender, blend the shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.  Add the milk and egg and mix just enough to moisten. Spread dough over hot apples. Sprinkle with remaining sugar and bake thirty five to forty minutes.  Serves 6 to 8.
