It was a beautiful morning, the sky was clear and blue. The polls had been open a few hours. New Yorkers were voting in a democratic primary for a new mayor. The moment the first plane hit our world turned dark and scary. On today's photo tour we'll show you some of the memories of that horrible day.
Top right picture you see the World Trade Center Twin Towers before September 11th 2001, with the Woolworth Building in the center.
Across the top you see pictures taken from Readio's office windows and our rooftop in Greenwich Village. You see the towers burning as the planes hit. My neighbor was working on the 81st Floor of the first tower when it was hit. She narrowly escaped with her life through the smoke and fire. For the first time today we are publishing her story. If you would like to read a real life survivor story of the World Trade Center terrorist attack, click here.
In the first days and weeks, everywhere you went you saw walls, telephone booths, signs, landmarks and buildings covered with pictures of missing people. Center right picture you see one of the memorials. People brought flowers, notes, candles and wept openly. We found ourselves frantically searching for familiar faces in the parks, stores, and businesses as we tried to go about our lives.
For one hundred days after the disaster the fires burned at what came to be called "Ground Zero". Bottom right picture you see Ground Zero of the WTC site 2 months later. Click here for the next page.
