"As we graze it grows"

4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup margarine, softened
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg

Basting mixture:
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup buttermilk
   
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.  In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in the buttermilk and egg. Place dough on lightly floured surface and knead it slightly. Form the dough into a round shape and place it on a prepared baking sheet.  In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk; use basting brush to brush mixture over loaf.  Use a sharp knife to cut a "X" in the top of the loaf.  Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.  Brush the loaf with the butter mixture periodically while it bakes.  Makes 12-15 slices.
