Harlem hosted a gala party to welcome President Bill Clinton to his new offices on 125th Street. This is the first time a President has made Harlem home. Before the event started we staked out our positions among a crowd of thousands in front of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building. As we waited the chants began "We want Bill"... and we soon got what we wanted.
Harlem's party for Bill Clinton was a star studded event to remember. The Harlem Boys Choir sang "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't got that Swing". Blues singers and gospel singers stirred our souls. We were inspired and uplifted by words from leaders including former Mayor David Dinkins, US Senator Charles E. Schumer, Representative Charles Rangel, State Comptroller Carl McCall and many others. We were delighted to see stars like Cecily Tyson. When Bill Clinton walked on stage the crowd went wild. We listened intently as he spoke of his plans to continue work on fighting AIDS. His goal is to help the economy of the poorer neighborhoods not only in Harlem but on the Indian reservations and throughout the country. His words of inspiration filled the air and I couldn't help but think that maybe Martin Luther Kings dreams were becoming a reality. When we sang "We shall overcome", we had. The last song we sang together was "Stand by Me". The saxophone played and Bill Clinton clapped and looked on longingly. As President Clinton left the stage we all knew this moment would stand forever in our memory. The man from Hope, Arkansas had given renewed hope to the people of his new home, Harlem.
