NYC Restaurant Reviews - "As we graze it grows"


1 cup brown sugar, (packed)
1 1/4 cups water
1/3 cup shortening
2 cups raisins
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cloves
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix brown sugar, water, shortening and raisins in saucepan.  Bring to a boil, remove from heat and cool.  Sift flour; blend in dry ingredients;  stir into cooled mixture.  Mix in nuts.  Spread dough evenly in greased pan, 13 x 9 x 2 inches.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 minutes or until no imprint remains when touched.  Cool and cut into 1/2 inch bars.
