Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Tuesday October 28th 2003 Jan watched her husband Skeeter sizing up the new sales clerk she had hired for him to work in his soon-to-open lingerie store. "Hi my name is Amanda," the young woman said offering Skeeter her hand. "Hey there Amanda," Skeeter said in his southern accent as she shook his hand vigorously. He looked her over quickly from head to foot. "You can call me Mannie," she said smiling broadly as she noticed the uncertainty in his eyes. "Mannie," he repeated as she unbuttoned her coat. "Yeah. This is a nice place you've got here," she said as she took off her coat. She placed it on a box marked "Thongs". "There's a lot to be done," he said noticing the black pinstriped pant's suit she was wearing. "That's what I'm here for," she said tapping her fingers on the box. "Well, I have to run. I'm closing on a condo at One Central Park in about an hour," Jan said glancing at her watch. "Thanks Jan. I really look forward to seeing you again," Mannie said. "Skeeter show Amanda around and get some prices on this stuff," Jan said walking towards the front door as Skeeter followed her. He opened the door for her and grabbed her by the arm stopping her before she could leave. "You've already hired her?" he whispered. "Yeah, why?" she whispered. "She doesn't look the part for this store," Skeeter said. "I'm not going to hire some giggly cartoon character Skeeter. Amanda is smart and she'll do a good job," Jan assured him as she glanced back to see Amanda picking up big boxes and placing them in the corner. "But she's not the image I wanted at all," Skeeter said. "She's a business person. With the kind of crap you've got in here you have to have someone a little more professional or people will think you're opening a house of ill repute," Jan said glancing around at the flimsy lingerie on the racks. "Be nice to her. I mean it Skeeter," she whispered before kissing him on the cheek and walking out of the door. Skeeter locked the door and watched as Jan walked towards her waiting limo at the curb on Bleecker Street. "So Skeeter. When are we opening?" Amanda asked as she took off her tailored jacket and rolled up the sleeves on her blouse. "I don't know yet. I haven't got the dressing room ready yet." "Where are you going to put it?" she asked glancing around the store. "I guess back there," he pointed towards the back of the store despondently. "Back there?" she asked glancing in the direction he pointed. "Yeah," he said noticing a tattoo of a motorcycle on her upper arm. "Well, that's kind of ordinary don't you think?" "Well, that's what I want. Look why don't we sit down and talk a little," he said taking a seat in a nearby chair. "Sure," she said walking towards him and pulling up a box to sit on. "So where do you live Amanda?" he asked. "I live on Christopher Street, right over there," she said nodding towards the West Village. "That's good, it's convenient to the store. What makes you want to work here in this store?" "Same thing that makes you want to work here in this store," she said smiling broadly. CONTINUED TOMORROW. MORE SOAP PHOTOS BELOW.
