Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday October 23rd 2003 "Hello, come in," Jan said watching the young woman walk into her office. The woman stopped at the door and extended her hand to Jan. "My name is Amanda," the woman said smiling as she shook Jan's hand vigorously. "Have a seat Amanda," Jan said pointing to the chair in front of her desk. Jan walked around and took a seat at her desk. "So you are interested in working in a retail store?" Jan asked eyeing the woman's black pinstriped pantsuit. "Yes," she said noticing the expensive décor in Jan's office in the Empire State Building. "I see on your resume that you have a lot of experience in retail," Jan said glancing down at the woman's resume. "Years." "Have you ever worked in ladies lingerie?" "Not yet. But I really want to," she said as her eyes lit up. "You like lingerie?" "Well, sure who doesn't?" "True." "Your experience seems more in line with the high-end designer stores in Soho," Jan said glancing down at the resume. "I'm tired of that though. I want to work somewhere more lively and fun." "So you like the Village?" "Love it." "Do you live in the Village?" "Yeah. I live in the West Village, off of Christopher Street." "Good then you'd be close to work." "Yeah, I think the ad in the newspaper said the store is on Bleecker." "That's right. It hasn't opened yet. You would be getting in on the ground floor of a new business." "That sounds great. I'm sure you'd be really happy with me," Amanda said as Jan glanced up to see her looking straight into her eyes. "Well, you would be working with my husband." "Oh," Amanda said as her smile faded. "It's his store. I'm just hiring for him." "I see." "He can't really operate the store alone and I'm very busy." "What kind of work do you do?" "I work with my father in real estate." "Oh I bet you are really busy," Amanda said noticing the big diamond ring on Jan's finger. "Yes. I also have a lot of social functions to attend," Jan said picking up on the fact that Amanda was sizing her up. "Then you need someone that can really take charge with this new store." "That's right. Someone that can work well with my husband too." "I'm sure I could handle it." "But I don't want someone that I have to worry about around my husband. I mean a loose woman or something," Jan said leaning back in her plush leather chair as she watched Amanda closely. "You wouldn't have to worry about me," she said with a chuckle. "You have a boyfriend?" Jan asked, aware of the hiring laws she might be breaking. "Let's just say you can rest assured I'll never have anything to do with your husband other than work with him. I have absolutely no interest in any kind of relationship with him other than business." "But you haven't met him," Jan said thinking about how good looking Skeeter is and how women are all attracted to him. "Yes. I see his picture right there," she said nodding her head at the credenza behind Jan's desk. "I can promise you, you'll never have to worry about me with your husband," Amanda said.
