Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Wednesday September 17th 2003
"Tiffany are you home?"  Starlene called out as she closed the door to the apartment overlooking Washington Square Park.
"In here," Tiffany said as she walked towards the hallway.
"I thought I'd stop by and see what's going on with your new apartment," Starlene said as she walked towards the door to her sister's bedroom. "Oh gee, looks like you're packing," she said when she spotted Tiffany's bed covered with clothes and boxes lining the floor.
"Yeah.  I tried to get out of the lease but I couldn't," she said shaking her head and frowning.
"It'll be okay.  You'll see," Starlene said pushing a box to the side and taking a seat on the side of the bed.
"I don't know.  There's just nothing I can do. It's too late. The rent is due on this apartment in a few days.  I want Amir to be able to rent it to someone else.  I feel bad about leaving but I feel worse about staying," she said pushing her hair from her eyes and grabbing more clothes from the drawer nearby.
"Have you told Amir that you are seeing Brandon?"
"No.  I haven't had the nerve to tell him.  I know I should, but I just can't bring myself to do it.  The new theater will open soon and then Brandon will be in town a lot.  I guess I'll be forced to tell Amir then."
"It'll all work out Tiffany. Don't worry."
"I worry more about the new apartment than anything else," she said thinking about her bad luck.  She found out yesterday that her ex-husband Skeeter had just signed a lease on the store in her building where he's opening a lingerie store.
"I know.  It's not a pleasant thought that you'll have to see Skeeter everyday.  No one is happy about this."
"Why?  What did Stanley say?" Tiffany asked referring to Starlene's lover and Skeeter's new father-in-law.
"To be honest.  He's trying to get Jan to divorce Skeeter."
"Really?  You mean he hates him that much?"
"Oh, yes.  He can't stand Skeeter. Those two are like Bush and Sadaam.  The mention of Skeeter's name just sets Stanley off.  Sometimes I worry that he'll have a stroke or something."
"Tell me what Stanley said," Tiffany said tossing the last of her clothes into the box and taking a seat on the bed beside her sister.
"He begged Jan to get a divorce. He said it will only get worse now that Skeeter has a store."
"That's probably the truth," Tiffany said thoughtfully.
"He thinks Skeeter is going to embarrass Jan.  He's worried that Skeeter will ruin their family name."
"That sounds so pretentious."
"I don't know Tiffany.  You know how bad Skeeter can be."
"We'll that's Jan's problem now. To be honest I'd rather see them stay married if he's going to be working in the same building where I live.  I would hate to have to watch him parade his girlfriends around in front of me."
"Don't you think that Jan will be around a lot?"
"I hope not. I hadn't given that much thought."
"She will.  I overheard the conversation and I can tell you that Jan isn't going to let Skeeter be there alone near you," Starlene said.
"What should I do Starlene?"
"I don't know. Maybe you need to talk to Jan and assure her that you have no interest in Skeeter anymore. Then she'll feel more confident and not stay over there all the time."
"Do you really think that would help?"
"How could it hurt?"
"When would I talk to her?  I hate her too much."
"Want me to talk to her and let her know how you feel?"
"Would you?"
"Yeah, I'll call her now," Starlene said pulling her cell phone from her purse.
