Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Wednesday August 20th 2003 "You here to see the space?" the middle aged pot bellied man asked as he held the door open for Skeeter. "Yep," Skeeter said glancing around the empty store. "What kind of business you got?" the man asked as Skeeter walked towards the back of the empty building. "I'm going to open a lingerie store," Skeeter said turning to look back as he imagined racks of sheer lingerie hanging near the windows in the front of the building. "Now that sounds good to me. How did you get into that business?" "I've always been a lingerie salesman. I worked for a company in Georgia before I moved to New York," Skeeter said opening the door to the restroom and glancing at the shiny new fixtures. "This would be a great place for a lingerie store. We got all the students from NYU that live around here." "Yeah, that would be great for business." "Lot of money in this neighborhood too," the man added. "I wouldn't have to do much to this space either. I looked at a couple nearby but they needed a lot of work," Skeeter said thinking about the dumpy places he'd seen this morning. "It won't be on the market long, I've had about forty calls on it," the man lied. "Forty. Wow. This must be a hot property," Skeeter said glancing at the new light fixtures. "Yeah, I'm sure this guy that's coming back next will be putting a deposit on it. If you want the place you better put some money down before he comes back." "I don't know. I was going to talk to my wife about it first," Skeeter said wondering what Jan would think of the place. "I thought it was your business," the man said as he walked towards the doorway and the keys on his belt jiggled with his heavy footsteps. "Well, it is my business. I was just going to run it by her first," Skeeter said wondering how angry Jan would be if he decided on the space without her. "I can't tell you what to do. The man that's coming over in a few minutes has his own business and I'm sure he's prepared to write a check today," the man lied. "I can write a check today if I want to." "It ain't none of my business. I just know these places don't stay available long. I just rented the apartment upstairs this morning to a really good looking woman," he said. "Yeah?" "Yeah, lot of women in the neighborhood. I don't know how your wife's going to feel about this place, but you'll have plenty of customers. These young girls around here they're loose. I see em' walking around in these sheer blouses with nothing on under them. It's enough to drive a man crazy," he said as Skeeter followed him out onto the sidewalk and he locked the front door behind them. "That's exactly the kind of women I'm looking for in my store," Skeeter said watching a couple of young women walk into the bagel store down the street. "You'll wish you'd never tied the knot," the man said glancing towards the corner of the street shielding his eyes from the sun with his hand. "I wish that already," Skeeter said thoughtfully. "I think I see that other guy coming now. The one that was going to bring me a check," he lied as he squinted into the sun. "I'll take it," Skeeter said reaching into his pocket and taking out the blank check that Jan had given him with strict instructions not to use without her prior approval. CONTINUED TOMORROW.
