Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday August 7th 2003 Skeeter hung up the phone after a surprising conversation with his new father-in-law Stanley. He took a long sip of his beer and propped his feet back up on Jan's antique coffee table. He glanced towards the doorway where the plump housekeeper Ilona stood after listening to the telephone conversation. "Ilona what time is Jan coming home?" he asked thoughtfully. "Today she come home soon," she said glancing at the clock on the mantle of the living room of the Upper East Side mansion. "Did you make dinner for us?" "Yes, Mr. Skeeter. I make you favorite meal," she said in her broken English. She hoped to impress the good-looking southerner. "You made prime rib?" he asked. "Yes for you. I make," she said smiling. "You're too good to me Ilona. If I move out one day I hope you'll come cook for me," he said smiling. "You move from Miss Jan's?" "Who knows? Her Daddy would like that," he said referring to the deal that Stanley had offered him. If he would agree to divorce Jan, Stanley would set him up in business in the city. "Mr. Morgan he get used to you in time." "I don't think so. He seems to hate my guts to tell you the truth." "Wealthy people they be how you say... difficult at first," she said remembering how long it took her to please Jan. "I'd say. But I ain't got time to be kissing you know what Ilona," he said winking. "Unless it's something I want," he said as his eyes traveled over her plump figure and her face reddened. The front door of the townhouse opened and Jan walked in with shopping bags from designer stores on Fifth Avenue. "Hey Baby, how you doing?" Skeeter asked eyeing her. "Skeeter get your feet off my coffee table," she said closing the door and tossing her bags on the chair nearby. "You'll ruin it and it's very expensive," she added as she watched her husband reluctantly take his feet down and reach for his beer. "I'll buy you a new one if I ruin it," he said unaware of the value. "I bought some new lingerie that I think you'll like honey," she said reaching into one of the bags. "Ilona get me a drink," she said glancing towards the doorway where the heavyset housekeeper was watching the interaction. Ilona quickly walked towards the kitchen quietly as possible hoping not to miss any of their conversation. "Let's see," Skeeter said as Jan held up a sheer nightgown for him to appraise. "How do you like it?" she asked hopefully. They had only been married a few months but she had noticed his interest was waning. "It's okay, I guess," he said as his mind returned to the conversation he'd had with her father only a few minutes ago. "Want me to try it on?" she asked grinning as she turned to see Ilona walking back into the living room with her drink. "Maybe later. I'm hungry and Ilona made my favorite dish tonight," he said watching as Ilona handed Jan the drink then pulled her apron down on her heavy hips when he glanced her way. "Right after dinner then. I'll try it on and we'll light some candles." "I got something I want to talk to you about tonight. The gown can wait," he said getting up and starting towards the dining room. "The honeymoon must be over. You're more interested in food," Jan said laughing. "Yeah, the honeymoon's over," he said wondering how she would take the news that the marriage was over.
