Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Monday May 5th 2003
"Skeeter look at this one," Jan said holding up a honeymoon brochure.
"Yeah, looks great," he said taking a long sip of his beer and placing the can on the coffee table of his Bleecker Street apartment.
"Are you going to just sit there and drink beer or help me figure out where we're going on our honeymoon?" she asked.
"I don't care we'll go wherever you want."
"Skeeter what's the matter with you?  We have to decide today."
"Why? The travel agency will take your money tomorrow," he said picking up the remote to the TV and turning it to the auto races.
"I need to tell the editors of the society magazines," she said choosing a few brochures from the stack.
"What if I don't decide today? What then?" he asked thinking about the last time he saw Jan's father and the offer he made.  One hundred thousand dollars to get married out of sight of the media was weighing heavily on his mind.
"Then we won't get the publicity that
I deserve."
"Is that all you're marrying me for is so
you can tell everyone you're married?"
"Don't be stupid. With my family money and connections I could marry anyone Skeeter," she said narrowing her selection down to a honeymoon in Italy.
"I'm not going through with this," he said picking up his beer and taking another long sip.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm not going to go through with this big wedding stuff."
"Well, thanks for letting me know so late."
"Late?  I never agreed to a firm date."
"Spring Skeeter. It's almost summer.  I've picked out the gown, selected the church and started to make the other arrangements."
"If you really want to marry me you'll go to Las Vegas with me."
"I've never had a wedding Skeeter. I want everyone that thought I'd never get married to see this," she said tossing the brochure of Italy on the floor.
"No! I won't go through with it. I won't wear a monkey suit and have some snobs talking about how I'm a lowly lingerie salesman," he said slamming his beer can onto the coffee table.
"Well, fine.  You sure waited long enough to tell me," she said getting up from the futon and walking towards the window overlooking Bleecker Street.
"You never gave me a chance to say anything Jan.  You bought the damn ring and told everyone we were engaged."
"I saved you a small fortune.  You never could afford a ring like this," she said admiring the huge diamond she had bought.
"What about the divorce from Tiffany? You tricked her into signing it," he said his heart sinking when he thought about the fact the divorce was really final after all these years.
"You couldn't get the divorce yourself.  I helped you with that," she said pacing in front of his window.
"You've done it all Jan.  Is that what my life will be like if I marry you?"
"If you marry me?  You agreed to marry me," she said as her heart started to race with fear at the thought of him backing out on her.
"I said I'm not going to go through a big show for you. If you want to marry me we go to Vegas or we don't get married at all," he said turning up the volume on the Nascar races and crushing his empty beer can.
