Starlene called out when she heard the front door of the apartment overlooking Washington Square Park close. "Yeah, it's just me," Tiffany said tossing her purse on the table beside the door. "Want some pizza?" Starlene asked taking a bite of her pizza as she watched Tiffany walk into the living room and take a seat in a nearby chair. "No thanks. You aren't going out to dinner with Stanley tonight?" Tiffany asked referring to her sister's wealthy older lover. "No, not until late and I was in the mood for Joe's Pizza," Starlene said touching her lips with a paper napkin and looking up. "What's the matter with you?" she asked seeing the depressed look on Tiffany's face. "Nicole got angry when she heard that Brandon had called me and that I'd gone to lunch with him," Tiffany said kicking off her high heel shoes. "Who cares? You knew she'd be jealous. She's married to Clark, tough for her," she said referring to Nicole's husband and Tiffany's boss. "Tough for me. Clark left and Nicole called Amir," Tiffany said as her voice started to tremble in anguish. "No! She's such a hussy," Starlene said picking up another piece of pizza from the cardboard box. "I listened as she talked on the phone upstairs in Clark's office. She told Amir that I'd gone to lunch with Brandon." "Well, he trusts you." "I hope so. Because she went by his office to see him after she hung up the phone," Tiffany said wiping a tear from her cheek. "No!" Starlene said dropping the pizza back into the "Joe's Pizza" box after a small bite. "Yeah. I'm sure she made it seem like I'm having an affair with Brandon." "Oh don't worry about it Tiffany. I think that Amir trusts you." "I don't know. If she told him the truth it sounds bad enough, what if she makes up extra stuff to go with it?" "What good would that do her?" Starlene asked picking up the pizza and putting long strings of cheese back on top before taking another bite. "I don't know. But I don't want to hurt Amir. I didn't want him to know that I'd been to lunch with Brandon. I shouldn't have gone to lunch with Brandon either." "Oh come on. You know Amir's wife is still missing. They might find her in a store shopping on his credit card and he'll never see you again. Brandon's single and rich, go for it," Starlene said closing the pizza box hoping to prevent the temptation of another slice. "I love Amir though. I feel horrible about this. I don't want Amir hurt." "Well, then don't see Brandon any more. Be a fool." "I've already told Brandon I would see him." "Well, there you go. That's what you should do." "Brandon asked me on the phone if he'd have to share me with Amir, and I said no," Tiffany said as the familiar guilt feelings returned. The cell phone rang on the coffee table and she reached to pick it up. She sniffled then answered, "Hello". "Is good to hear your voice," Amir said in his broken English. "Amir! I was just talking to Starlene about you," she said her eyes brightening as she nodded her head toward Starlene. "You be home this evening?" he asked. "Yes, I'll be here," Tiffany said glancing up and watching as Starlene smiled broadly. "I come there. Is very important, we talk," he said. "Oh sure, when are you coming?" she asked bending over to reach her heels from under the chair. "I come now. My driver be there ten minutes," he said motioning his hand at his limo driver as the stoplight changed and the long white car started towards Washington Square Park. CONTINUED MONDAY.
