Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Tuesday March 18th 2003
Tiffany reached for the TV remote and quickly turned down the sound on the television as she clutched the phone closer to her ear.
"What is it Amir?  I thought they said that the body of the woman they found in the Hudson River wasn't your wife Malena?" Tiffany said referring to the TV report.  For almost a week everyone in New York City thought the dead woman might be his missing wife.
"No, this woman not my Malena," he said in his broken English.
"I'm so relieved," Tiffany said feeling guilty that most of her relief was due to the fact she didn't have to worry about the police investigating her since she'd been with him the night his wife disappeared.
"Yes. But more problem, how you say... come up," he said his voice filled with misery. "I get note from extremist group.  They say they soon kill Malena because I have business in America and become citizen."
"No!"
"Yes.  They say if I want her back that I pay."
"Oh that's horrible. Do the police know this?"
"Yes, they tell me no talking in public.  They investigate more."
"Oh I'm so sorry Amir.  Do you think they are telling the truth."
"Police only tell me no talk of this to people."
"No. I mean the extremist group.  Do you think they will kill her?"
"Yes.  I thinks this much they say is true."
"That's so horrible."
"When will you know something?"
"Soon my lawyer makes statement to press.  I offer them money to return Malena."
"I just can't believe this."
"Tell no one my love.
"No of course not.  I'm so sorry."
"How have you been?" he asked.
"Not too good."
"What happens."
"Oh it's not important."
"Yes, yes tell me what happens."
"I finally got the divorce from Skeeter."
"This is good news, no?"
"Yes.  I guess it is good news really.  It's just the way it all happened that has bothered me.  But that doesn't matter.  You have enough on your mind."
"Tell me what happens to upset you."
"Jan just tricked me into signing the papers.  She had her secretary call me at home one night saying that she was a reporter with NYC Investigative Magazine. Then the next day Jan dropped by the office and swore she would phone the editors and tell them everything she knew about us if I didn't sign the divorce papers so that she could marry Skeeter. Of course I didn't know there isn't any such magazine."
"This horrible thing."
"Yes, it's pretty rotten and low.  But at least it's over with Skeeter and me.  She can marry him now."
"This bothers you that he marry Jan?"
"No.  I don't guess so," she lied.
"Good."
"I guess it's just sad because I always wanted to be happily married. Now my marriage is over and so is my dream."
"You give up very easy."
"No I was married to him for years.  I did try."
"No, you give up on dream too easy.  Maybe your dream come true soon."
"What do you mean Amir?" she asked hopefully.
"I want for your every dream to come true.  One day soon my love, soon your dream be true."
