Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Tuesday February 4th 2003 "Tiffany's probably asleep by now," Skeeter said in his slow southern accent as he pulled the sheet up over his body hoping to put an end to the conversation. "She just called and left that message Skeeter. Do I need to play it again for you?" Jan asked grabbing her robe from the chair and putting it on preparing for a long fight. "Man it's really late. Come on back to bed Baby. We can handle this tomorrow," he said rubbing his eyes pretending to be tired. "Tomorrow our engagement announcement will be in the newspaper. I want this straightened out with you and Tiffany now," Jan said pacing in front of his bed. "And what do you want me to tell her?" "That you want to marry me. That it's over with her." "I can't do that Jan." "Why? Why not?" "Because. It's just not the right thing to do." "Do you want to marry me or not?" "I don't know." "May I remind you that you wouldn't have a job if it weren't for me Skeeter Diamond," referring to the fact that she was friends with his boss. "So you're going to hold my job over my head? Is that it?" "No. I would never do anything like that," she said seeing that this tactic only seemed to anger him. "Good, cause it won't work Jan. I'll just find another job." "Jobs aren't that easy to find Skeeter." "I'm a salesman. I sell lingerie, Jan. I can find another job. Women are always going to buy lingerie to make their men happy." "I'm just saying you won't have to sell lingerie or sell anything else once we're married. You're a smart man Skeeter. Don't you want a good life?" "Yeah, of course Baby," he said thinking about her wealth. "Then treat me right. That's all I'm asking," she said taking a seat on the bed beside him. "Come here Baby, you know I care," he said rubbing her bare leg hoping to change the subject. "I know you do. That's why I bought the engagement ring for you to give me," she said stroking his thick black hair. "Come on to bed, it's late," he said pulling the sheet back for her to get into the bed with him. "As soon as you call," she said picking up his cell phone beside the bed and handing it to him. "Okay. If that's what you really want," he said dialing Tiffany's number. Tiffany put her novel down and picked up the ringing phone on the nightstand by her bed in the apartment overlooking Washington Square Park. "Hello," she said. "Tiffany, hi it's me. Were you asleep?" Skeeter asked. "No. Did you get out of my building tonight without running into Jan's father?" Tiffany asked. "Well, that didn't cause me the problem tonight," he said in a voice meant to convey that he did have a problem. "Oh, Jan was there when I left the message on your machine just now?" "Yep". "Oh. I see," Tiffany said. "On that note I guess there are some things I'm supposed to tell you." "What's that?" "That the announcement for the engagement will be in the newspaper tomorrow. Which makes it final that I'm engaged to Jan," he said glancing up the see the smile on Jan's face. "I see. Does that mean you are going to marry her Skeeter?" "No." "I see. She's listening and made you call me didn't she?" "That's right. Glad you understand my position." "If I know Jan Morgan she's standing right over you now." "That's right Tiffany. I'm glad you understand." "She really thinks she can use her money to run everyone's life," Tiffany said remembering how many times Jan had tried to get her fired at work. "That's the truth." "We'll talk more later," Tiffany said. "I knew you'd understand," Skeeter said hanging up the phone. "All done," he said smiling. "Not everything," Jan said taking off her robe and walking towards the bed. CONTINUED TOMORROW. MORE SOAP PHOTOS BELOW.
