2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 2/3 cup plus two tablespoons granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup shortening 2/3 cup milk 1/4 cup melted butter 3 cups chopped peeled apples 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Frosting: 2 cups confectioners sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon butter 3 tablespoons heavy cream 1/4 cup chopped nuts.
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. To prepare strudel, sift the flour, baking powder, two tablespoons granulated sugar and salt together. With fingertips or a pastry blender, blend in the shortening. Stir in the milk to make a soft dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead twenty five to thirty times. Roll out to one quarter inch thickness. Brush with the melted butter. Cover with the apples and sprinkle with the remaining granulated sugar and the cinnamon. Starting at the long end, roll like a jellyroll. Transfer to a greased baking sheet. Curve strudel into a crescent. Bake about thirty minutes, or until done. To prepare frosting, combine the confectioners sugar with the cinnamon, butter and cream. Frost the strudel while warm.
