Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Friday August 23rd 2002 "Yes. Amir's wife is missing," Tiffany said holding the phone in one hand and reaching for her wineglass with the other. She glanced at her lover Amir as he sat beside her on the sofa of her apartment overlooking Washington Square Park. "What does Amir say about it?" "I don't know," she lied. She knew Clark would be angry if he knew his client Amir had spent the day in her apartment. "You haven't seen him?" "Well, I've seen him. But I don't know what he thinks. It's all a big mess." "Have the police questioned you?" "Yeah. But that was a week ago. I don't know anything so they moved on," Tiffany said as her hands began to tremble. "I guess I'll call Amir and see how he's doing before I get back." "When are you coming back?" "Tomorrow night." "Oh. So you'll be in the office on Monday?" "Yeah. Nicole and I will be there this weekend. If anything comes up then stop by." "How was the wedding?" "Great. It was just great. You should have seen this yacht. Her family has mansions in Florida and here in Italy." "You're in Italy now?" "Yeah. And the food here is wonderful." "Great. I'm glad you are so happy. How's Nicole?" "She's beaming. I think I've found myself the perfect wife," he said looking up as he watched Nicole packing clothes in their suitcases. "And her family? You like them?" Tiffany asked wondering how he had hit it off with her mob boss family. "They are wonderful people Tiffany. It's really unfair all the rumors that people have started. It's all because they're jealous of their wealth and connections I feel sure." "I'm really happy for both of you," Tiffany lied. "Well, I better go. I'll see you soon. Let me know if you hear from Amir too. This is very sad about his wife. Very sad," he said hanging up the phone. "He's going to call you Amir. I feel so guilty lying to him like this." "One day no more lies for us. We be together," he said in his broken English. "I don't see how that will ever be possible." "This I hope. But now I must go," he said standing up and starting for the door to leave. "I'm going to miss you Amir," she said as the tears started to roll down her cheeks. "I call you later from payphone." "You're afraid to use your phone at home?" "Yes. I don't want police to ever think that I see you while Malena is missing. I don't want this ever to cause you trouble," he said walking towards her front door as she followed him. "Please call me," she said as he kissed her on the cheek and opened the door to leave. "Don't let Skeeter in if he come back here," he said referring to her estranged husband that had stopped by earlier. "Don't worry," she said closing the door when the elevator opened in the hallway. A well dressed lady stepped out of the elevator glancing towards Amir then the doorway and the sheer robe Tiffany was wearing. Tiffany closed the heavy metal door of her apartment and locked it. She wondered if she could live with the guilt of seeing a married man while his wife was missing. She knew she should make this the last time she was alone with Amir until his life was straightened out. She walked towards the bathroom taking off her sheer silk robe. She stepped into the shower and as the water touched her body, she remembered Amir's touch. The water from the shower mingled with her tears. ___________ "Amir Hada " a man asked as the elevator door closed. "Yes," Amir said as he turned to look at the stranger in the elevator with him.
