Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Tuesday August 20th 2002 Tiffany shut her apartment door and fastened the chain lock. She took a deep breath to try and calm her nerves as she listened to the sound of the elevator door open and close in the hallway outside of her apartment overlooking Washington Square Park. She opened the peephole and looked out. She didn't see her estranged husband Skeeter anywhere in sight. "Here, I pay for this delivery," Amir said walking from her bedroom with a hundred dollar bill in his hand. He walked around the corner and saw his lover still wearing the sheer robe she had slipped on before he got into the shower. He noticed that she was leaning against the door holding the bag of food and staring at the floor as if in deep thought. "Delivery come, no?" he asked in his broken English walking towards her. "Oh, yes. The food is here," she said quickly walking towards him to get away from the front door. "Is there something wrong?" he asked noticing her nervousness. "Come in here, we'll have lunch," she said walking towards the kitchen and placing the bag of food on the counter. "Here," he said handing her the hundred dollar bill. "I've already paid for it," she said remembering her struggle with her estranged husband at the door. She knew it was unlike Skeeter to leave without a fight. She wondered why he had left without confronting Amir. She wondered if he would be waiting somewhere in the building. "Something is wrong, no?" Amir asked as he walked towards her. "Something has come up," she said avoiding his embrace and walking towards the cabinet to take out glasses for the wine. "While I take shower, something happens?" he asked. "Yes. Skeeter came by," she said turning to see the shock on his handsome face. "To here, he comes?" "Yes. He got past the doorman and knocked on my door. I thought it was the deliveryman with the food," she said taking a corkscrew from the drawer and attempting to open the bottle of wine she had delivered. "Oh God." "Yes. He knows you were here too," Tiffany said pointing towards the bottle of wine in frustration. Amir walked towards the counter and started to open the bottle while she watched. "I can't believe I convinced him to leave," she said holding out her hands to show him that they were still shaking from the confrontation. "What does he say?" "That he knew you were in here." "Why does he come here?" "I don't really know. He said he wanted to talk to me." "Does he come often to talk?" "Never. The last time he was here he saw your car out front and hit you," she said referring to the incident that had landed Skeeter in jail and Amir in the hospital. "Thank God he leave." "It's not like him though. That's what I don't understand." "What do you tell him?" "I told him that your bodyguard was on the way up here when we heard the elevator coming to this floor." "Then he believes you and he leave," he said smiling proud of her ability to handle a very tense situation. He popped the cork on the bottle of wine and held it up to her as if to toast. "But he's smarter than that Amir. If he doesn't see your bodyguard in the hallway, he might come back," she said watching as he placed the bottle of wine on the counter and a look of recognition swept his face as he realized she was probably right.
