West of Times Square you'll find an area known as Hell's Kitchen. During the 19th Century an impoverished Irish community lived here amid gangs and crime. Following the Irish were the Greeks, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and other ethnic groups. The area was the backdrop for the musical West Side Story. The days of crime and gangs are long gone. The area was renamed to Clinton, but many people still affectionately call it Hell's Kitchen.
Top right picture was taken at the Ninth Avenue Street Festival. This giant street fair stretched as far as the eye could see in both directions. What a neighborhood block party!
Center right picture you see the Milford Plaza Hotel on Eighth Avenue.
Bottom right picture you see the Eugene O'Neill Theatre at 230 West 49th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. This is where the cast of the Broadway show "The Full Monty" take it off every night.
