Sweet Smell Of Success Opened March 14th, 2002 Martin Beck Theatre, 302 West 45th St. between 8th and 9th Ave. 212-239-6200; $25-$95; Mon-Sat 8 PM; Wed, Sat 2 PM; John Lithgow stars in this new musical based on the novella by Ernest Lehman and the 1957 MGM/UA film by Clifford Odets and Mr. Lehman; The book is by John Guare and it features the music of Marvin Hamlisch; Lyrics by Craig Carnelia; Directed by Nicholas Hytner and also stars Brian d'Arcy James. The Musical director is Jeffrey Huard.
The Tale of The Allergist's Wife Opened November 2nd 2000 Ethel Barrymore Theatre, 243 West 47th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue. 212-239-6200. $30-$70, Tue-Sat 8 PM; Wed & Sat 2 PM; Sun 3 PM; 2 hours 30 minutes. One intermission. Produced by Manhattan Theatre Club, this satire is a very funny comedy starring Valerie Harper, who plays an Upper West Sider. Tony Roberts, Michele Lee co-star in this new play by Charles Busch, directed by Lynne Meadow. Lighting by Christopher Akerlind, Costumes Ann Roth, Settings Santo Loquasto and Sound by Bruce Ellman.
Thoroughly Modern Millie Opened April 18th 2002 Marquis Theatre, 1535 Broadway between 45th & 46th St; 212-307-4100; $55-$95; Tue-Sat 8 PM; Sat 2 PM; Sun 3 PM; The inspiration for this new musical was the 1967 musical film of the same name. It takes place in 1922 during the expansion of women's liberties and freedom. The book was written by Richard Morris, "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". Direction by Michael Mayer; Choreography by Rob Ashford; Sutton Foster is "Millie". Featuring Sheryl Lee Ralph, Harriett Harris, Marc Kudisch, Gavin Creel, Angela Christian, Ken Leung, Francis Jue and Anne L. Nathan. Its World Premiere was in San Diego at La Jolla Playhouse on October 15th 2000.
TopDog/Underdog Opened April 7th 2002 Ambassador Theatre, 219 West 49th Street between Broadway and 8th Ave; 212-239-6200; $15-$75; Tue-Sat 8 PM; Sat 2 PM; Sun 2 & 7 PM; This play is a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama Award winner. Suzan-Lori Parks wrote this new 2-character play which is a story of 2 brothers with the names "Lincoln" and "Booth". The names, which were given to them as a joke, affords them a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. A story of brotherly love and identity. Directed by George C. Wolfe. Features Jeffrey Wright and Mos Def. Its World Premiere was at the Public Theatre on July 26th, 2001.
