Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday September 27th 2001
Amir walked into his Upper East Side mansion at Sutton Place and closed the door behind him.
"Mister Hada, I'm so sorry," his housekeeper said walking towards him.
"You say they leave two hours before she call me?" he asked in his broken English placing his briefcase beside the sofa and pouring himself a glass of sherry from the decanter on the coffee table.
"Yes, her Mother say that she read newspaper and see that you are with Miss Tiffany.  She say this make Malena sick and she fall back into coma," the housekeeper said in her foreign accent.
"I wish you call me at office and tell me this before they leave," Amir said.
"Her Mother forbid me to do this," the housekeeper said as her fingers touched the wad of money in her apron pocket that Amir's Mother-in-law, Tiso had paid her not to tell Amir that she was leaving town with his sick wife.
He picked up his glass of sherry and walked towards the stairs to go to his wife's bedroom.
"Mister Hada," the housekeeper said at the bottom of the stairs.
"Yes."
"You have dinner here this evening?"
"Yes."
Amir walked up the stairs and into the bedroom. He saw the bed that his sick wife had occupied this morning when he left for work.  The bed was still unmade and the newspaper was thrown on the bottom of the white linen sheets. He picked up the newspaper and saw the front-page picture the detective had taken of himself and Tiffany kissing on his veranda. He knew he had no one else to blame but himself.  He quickly spotted an envelope on the table beside the bed; he saw his name on the front.  He opened the envelope and read the handwritten message.
"Dear Amir,
After awaking from coma Malena never remember her marriage to you.  I spent many hours showing her photographs of your wedding in our country. I try to help her regain memory. Today she see this newspaper that you so carelessly leave on this bed while you talk to this Tiffany.  This woman that you kiss cause my Malena much pain.  So much pain that she lapse back to coma.  This I never forgive you. I take my daughter back to island for recover.  There she remember good life if she ever wake again. You forget your family, your people when you move to America.  You become as America mans, cheat on wife. This I never forgive, never.
Sincerely, Tiso"

Amir folded the note and put it back into the envelope. He glanced at the clock and knew it was too early to try and call his Mother-in-law.  It would be hours before the private plane would reach his tiny island. He put the envelope back on the table and walked down the stairs into his living room. He could hear the sounds of his housekeeper preparing dinner in the kitchen.  As he walked towards the sofa the phone rang.
"Hello," he answered as he took a seat on the sofa.
"Amir.  I hope it's okay that I called you?", Tiffany asked.
"Yes."
"What's the matter? You sound very upset," she said hearing the despair in his voice.
"Malena she leave," Amir said.
"Your wife left?"
"Yes, her Mother take her back to island."
"Oh," Tiffany said trying to hide her happiness over this development.
"She see picture of us kissing on newspaper and go back into coma.  Her Mother take her home to island," Amir said.
"I'm so sorry Amir."
"This I never think happen."
"This is my fault.  I feel so bad. It's all my fault…." Tiffany said worrying that he would never forgive her for this incident.
"No.  You are all I have left."
"You want to come over here," she asked worried. She had never heard so much pain in her lover's voice before.
"I send my car for you," he said wiping a tear from his cheek.
The housekeeper quit listening and quickly walked away from the living room doorway back into the kitchen when she heard Amir hang up the phone.
