New York City's downtown area is different from any other area of the city. It's on the narrow streets of downtown that you'll find the government buildings and the financial district. You'll also find the islands edge and the great views of the Statue of Liberty.

Top left picture you see Federal Hall on Wall Street. The steps of this building are a great place to sit and watch the Wall Street stock brokers during lunch.
Center right picture you see the esplanade along the Hudson River at Battery Park.
