Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday March 22nd 2001 "Hi Steve," Jan said into the phone as she sat at her desk overlooking the Hudson River at Manhattan Gold International. "Hi Jan. The check for the library fund was mailed to the Mayor today," he said sure that's why the older wealthy socialite had phoned him at his office. "That's great Steve. I was wondering if maybe you would like to come over to my house and celebrate this evening. I could have my housekeeper cook a nice dinner for the two of us. It's the least I could do after all the money you and your family have raised," Jan said tapping her long manicured nails on her desk as she watched the sunset over the Hudson River. After escorting her to Amir's party at the Waldorf last night she thought perhaps now they might spend some quiet intimate time in her mansion tonight and take their relationship to the level she had always desired. "Thanks Jan, but I don't think Elizabeth would like that," he said. "Elizabeth…. Who's Elizabeth?" she asked as she quit tapping her nails. "She's this girl I've been seeing." "Oh. I didn't know you were seeing anyone," she said trying to hide the disappointment in her voice. "Yeah. She'll be back in town tomorrow. She's been studying abroad." "Oh. Really. I had no idea," Jan said shocked. "Yeah, we've kept it quiet. My family wants to make a big announcement but timing is everything you know…. I don't have to explain that to you though," he said laughing slightly. "Did they see us together on the evening news last night?" "Oh sure. Being seen with you doesn't matter though. My family and Elizabeth both know that was just for political purposes." "Of course," Jan said feeling her face redden with a mixture of anger and embarrassment. "Maybe I could bring Elizabeth over one night," he suggested. "Sure…maybe we'll do that. Nice talking with you Steve," Jan said hanging up the phone. How dare him not tell her that he was seeing some little tramp, she thought. Worse of all she dreaded going home alone tonight. She quickly picked up the phone and hit speed dial and listened to the phone ringing. "Hello", Skeeter said answering the phone beside the bed in his Bleecker Street apartment. "Skeeter I think we should talk," she said. "Go ahead… shoot," he said in his slow southern accent. "Maybe we should meet and talk. Why don't you come over tonight and Ilona will cook for us. She'll make your favorite dish." "I don't know." "What do you mean you don't know Skeeter?" "You've got Stevie boy now," he said remembering how Jan and Steve had danced last night at the China Room Club. "He's only a friend of the family Skeeter. I would never become involved with him, he's too young and not my type." "That's not what you said before. You seemed to like him last night. He's got money. He's of the right social status. He's good enough to be seen with out in public and on TV, but I'm not." "Oh stop it Skeeter. Why don't you come over and we'll talk this over," she said longing for his familiar touch. "I don't like it that you can't be seen with me, but you can be seen with this Stevie guy cause he comes from the right family." "It's not like that Skeeter. I'm willing to forgive you for being with that Cynthia tramp last night." "Skeeter, are you going with me…" Cynthia said walking into the bedroom pausing when she saw that he was on the phone. "You're with that girl again aren't you Skeeter?" Jan said feeling her shoulders tense with rage. "I don't know why you'd care," he said. "You're going to lose everything Skeeter. You either get rid of her and come over tonight or…" CONTINUED TOMORROW. MORE PHOTOS BELOW.
