Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday March 15th 2001 "So what do you do for a living?" Starlene asked the stranger beside her at the bar in the China Room Club, an after hours nightclub. She listened for his answer as she gazed across the smoke-filled room as an unsuspecting Jan Morgan took a seat across the table from her wealthy young date. "I book musicians," he said. "Get out of here! You mean I've been sitting here talking to you all this time and you know musicians," she said hitting the stranger on the arm. "Well, you certainly seem to be doing okay in New York before you met me", he said laughing. He had been surprised that Starlene had just left Amir Hada's much talked about celebrity party at the Waldorf Astoria before coming here tonight. "Why are you asking me what rock stars are going to be here tonight? You probably already know!" she said taking a closer look at the stranger that had bought her a drink earlier. "No. I don't know of any stars that will be here tonight. The bands I book are up and coming musicians." "Oh," she said as her smile faded and she glanced around the room. "I might know important people one day though," he said seeing her disappointment. "Yeah. Well, where do you book bands?" "Mostly Bleecker Street Clubs, some clubs in Hoboken." "Umm," she said taking another sip of her drink and watching Jan talk with her wealthy young date. She wondered when Skeeter would arrive and what he would say to Jan when he caught her with this handsome young guy. Her pulse quickened thinking about the impending confrontation. Jan had been so nasty towards her. This would put her in her place for making fun of her southern background, she thought. "So you know this Jan Morgan over there and the cameraman filming for "Go Gossip" TV outside the door. You just came from a party tonight with Stanley Morgan, Amir Hada and the Mayor. I can't touch that Starlene." "It's not what you know, it's who you know, they always say," she said in her thick southern accent smiling as he ordered her another drink. "You seem to be meeting all the right people. I'd like to take you out one night." "Look there's Skeeter!" she said ignoring his invitation and nodding towards the front door. "Skeeter. Who's he?" "My ex-brother-in-law". "The one that's married to your sister that's with Amir Hada in his mansion tonight, right?" "Right," she said watching Skeeter in his black leather jacket as he paid his admission to get into the club. "And Skeeter's the one that's been sleeping with Jan Morgan secretly, right?" the stranger asked. "You're getting the picture now," she said smiling as she looked towards Jan to see if she had noticed Skeeter coming into the club. "Does Skeeter know that Jan's here with that rich boy tonight?" "I called him and told him." "Why did you do that?" "Cause Jan's nasty. She got my sister fired from her job a few months ago. She's sleeping with my sister's husband. I know Skeeter…he's hot tempered. He won't put up with her," she said picking her glass to take another sip. "Skeeter dates musicians too I see," he said. "What do you mean?" she asked quickly putting her glass on the bar and looking towards the front door. "It's who you know Starlene," he said smiling. CONTINUED TOMORROW. MORE PHOTOS BELOW.
