Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Friday March 9th 2001 Skeeter sat on the stained futon sofa in his Bleecker Street apartment. He couldn't get Starlene's recent phone call out of his mind. He wondered if Tiffany's younger sister was having a good time tonight at the celebrity party at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and why Jan hadn't talked to him about the big event. He picked up the remote to the television and hit the "on" button. He flipped through the channels until he found "Go Gossip", the local talk television program. "Did anyone find out what her connections are that she's with the Mayor and Stanley Morgan?" the gossip columnist asked the reporter at the Waldorf Astoria ballroom. "She's just a newcomer to town," the reporter said as a picture flashed on the screen showing Starlene between the Mayor and Stanley Morgan. Skeeter quickly hit the "record" button remembering that Starlene had asked him to record the show in case she was seen on television. The camera went back to the live shot from the ballroom of the Waldorf and the reporter. "Any other interesting new faces there tonight?" the gossip columnist in the studio asked. "Jan Morgan has a new beau," the reporter said as the camera zoomed in on Jan as she stood beside her handsome young date. "Who's he?" "No one seems to know. I'll see if I can find out," the reporter said walking towards Jan. The ringing of the telephone interrupted Skeeter's thoughts. With his eyes still glued to the television set he picked up the ringing phone. "Yeah," he said. "Skeeter did you see me on television?" Starlene asked as she stood in the corridor at the payphone near the ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria. "Just now," he said. "That was taped. It wasn't live. We taped that a few minutes ago. Did I look good?" she asked breathless with excitement. She held the phone closer to her ear so that she could hear her ex-brother-in-law over the music and conversations from the ballroom. "Yeah. You looked great Starlene." "You saw me with the Mayor and Stanley Morgan?" "Both of them, yeah. You going to bed with the Mayor too?" Skeeter asked laughing. "No! I'm after Stanley. I told you that. You taping it for me?" "Yeah. I'm taping it. Who's Jan there with?" Skeeter asked eyeing the television as he watched Stanley's daughter Jan, his secret lover, on the screen. "I don't know. I haven't paid much attention to her. I've been so busy getting interviewed and everything," she said satisfied that she'd get to see the tape of herself on TV. "Miss Morgan, We haven't had the opportunity to talk with you this evening," the reporter said as Jan turned her attention to the camera and her handsome date held her arm. "Hold on Starlene. They're interviewing her now," Skeeter said putting his hand over the phone and turning his full attention to the television set. "This is Steve Goldstein," Jan said smiling towards her handsome date. "Steve we've read about your family over the years but this is the first time we've seen you at these events," the reporter said holding a microphone towards the younger man. "You will be from now on though. I'll be working with Stanley and Jan on building the new libraries in the schools." "So Jan, you have the new librarian with you tonight?" the reporter asked smiling. "I don't think I'd call Steve a librarian," she said smiling and clutching his arm tightly. Skeeter watched as she pressed her bosom into the handsome socialites' arm and looked up into his dark eyes. "Have you known Mr. Goldstein long?" the reporter asked. "He's been a friend of the family a long time," Jan said. "Just a friend?" "I guess you could say a lot more than just a friend now", Jan said as Steve smiled and the television station went into commercial break. "Starlene," Skeeter said into the phone. "Yeah?" "Where is the Waldorf anyway?" CONTINUED MONDAY. MORE PHOTOS BELOW.
