Tuesday January 30th 2001 "Hello," Starlene said breathlessly into the phone. "I was starting to think you weren't home," Tiffany said relieved to hear the voice of her younger sister after the phone had rung several times in her apartment overlooking Washington Square Park. "I was on my way out of the door," Starlene said. "Where were you going?" "A job interview at the theater." "Do you have an interview later tonight?" "No, why?" "Because Clark wanted me to ask you to come to a party for Laney". "Wow! Clark wants me to come?" "Yeah. It's a dinner party at a restaurant in Tribeca. Stanley's giving her the party. Do you want to come?" "Sure! I'd love it," Starlene said in her thick southern accent. "Okay. I'll have to meet you there because I have to stay at the office until late this evening." "What should I wear?" "Don't wear that short leather skirt Starlene," Tiffany said hoping her sister wouldn't embarrass her again. Starlene had shown up in fishnet stockings, high heels and her tight leather skirt when she stopped by the office the other day and met Tiffany's boss Clark for the first time. "Tell me what…what should I wear then?" she asked her mind racing with excitement. "Something conservative Starlene". "Who's coming to this party?" Starlene asked ignoring her sister's boring suggestion for her attire. "I don't think it'll be a lot of people. Amir will be there. He stopped by the office a few minutes ago and Clark asked him to come. So remember Starlene…don't let on that Amir and I are lovers." "Of course not". "I mean it Starlene. I'll lose my job if Clark finds out that I'm with Amir." "Okay". "Promise?" "Yes! I promise." "Who else will be there?" "I don't really know… Got to run. I'll see you there. Good luck on your interview", Tiffany said hanging up the phone when she saw Jan walk through the door. "Hello Tiffany," Jan said closing the front door and taking off her coat. "Hi Jan," Tiffany said watching her throw her full-length mink coat partially over the chair near the front door. "Clark's expecting me," Jan said lying as she started to walk towards the staircase. "He's not here." "He knew I was stopping by. When do you expect him back?" "In about thirty minutes". "I'll wait," she said taking a seat on the sofa. "I'd like some coffee," she said picking up a travel magazine from the coffee table and opening it. Tiffany got up from her chair begrudgingly and started to walk towards the kitchen to get the coffee for Jan. "Are you happy having your job back Tiffany?" "Yes." "Did Clark tell you?" "Tell me what?" "That I told him to rehire you," she lied. "No he never said that." "I told him not to. Don't tell him I let you know, but I told him to rehire you." "Why would you do that? I thought you didn't want me working here," she said turning to face Jan. She watched as Jan thumbed through the travel magazine never looking up. "I decided that you're an asset to the business", Jan said turning pages of the magazine and never looking up at Tiffany. "That's nice of you Jan." "It's business Tiffany. I'm a businesswoman and you're Clark's secretary. He's in the entertainment business. It was an easy decision. I decided that you have a place here. As long as you keep your place you have a job," she said glancing up to see Tiffany's cold stare. "What does that mean?" "It means do your job. By the way Tiffany bring me sugar with the coffee," she said throwing the magazine on the table and putting her feet up on the glass coffee table as she smiled at Tiffany. CONTINUED TOMORROW.
