Monday December 18th 2000 He looked more handsome than she had remembered as the light in the elevator glistened on his dark hair. Surprised to see him, her legs felt weak as she stepped into the waiting car. The familiar smell of his European after shave stirred her desires as the elevator doors quickly closed leaving the two estranged lovers alone descending towards the lobby of his new celebrity spa on the West Side of Manhattan. "This most pleasant surprise", Amir said in his broken English smiling as his dark eyes adored her every movement. "I guess you are surprised to see me here, I shouldn't be so surprised to see you, I suppose," she said laughing nervously as she realized he had to be wondering why she was visiting the executive office suites of his new building. "We have lunch?" he offered realizing his chance meeting with her would end in seconds. "I don't know," she said as the elevator stopped and a woman resembling a famous movie star dressed in a full length white mink and sunglasses stepped inside. "How is everything going?" Tiffany asked as the doors closed and the elevator started to descend again. "I give you full report soon," Amir said nodding his head at the woman in the mink coat as the elevator door opened into the lobby of the building. Tiffany and Amir followed the woman in the mink coat out into the busy pink marble floors of the lobby of Manhattan Gold International. "Where you go now?" he asked. "I was going home." "I go with you," he said smiling. "I don't know Amir," she said torn between her desire and the memory of learning about his marriage in the newspapers. "You are still angry, no?" "Yes." "We have lunch I explain everything to you." "I don't know," she said has her eyes darted around the lobby realizing that Skeeter her estranged husband might walk in at any moment and catch her with her wealthy lover. "I love you Tiffany," he said softly as people rushed by them carrying designer bags filled with Christmas gifts from the expensive shops on the ground floor. "Do you really Amir?" she whispered as she felt tears coming to her eyes. "This I am certain. Do you still love me?" "Yes." "Then we talk now." "I'm not certain about us going to the apartment," she said knowing that she would never be able to resist him if they were alone. On the other hand, she knew she couldn't stand in the lobby much longer. "We go to my office," he said turning and touching the button to the elevator that had just brought them to the lobby. "Is Jan there? I don't want to be around her," Tiffany said feeling certain that his assistant Jan was the person that had called and hung up at Skeeter's apartment this morning. "No. She have lunch engagement." "You're sure? I really don't want to see her." "I have private office. We be alone." "Okay," she said glancing nervously towards the front entrance realizing Skeeter was expected back from lunch at any moment The elevator to the Penthouse opened and they stepped inside. The moment the heavy brass doors closed Amir pulled her into his arms. "I exist only to love you," he said gazing into her eyes as he pulled her closer. "Someone might see us," she said as she weakened at his familiar touch and the warmth of his firm body. "I want world to know," he said kissing her warm waiting lips.
The cab driver hit the brakes suddenly. Skeeter's hand tightened around Jan's shoulders as their cab dodged a bus during lunch hour traffic. "Next time get your driver to wait," Skeeter said in his slow southern accent annoyed with their jerky cab drive back to Manhattan Gold International after their long liquid lunch in Little Italy.
