Unless there's a huge event at the United Nations... life in the 40's and 50's can be rather quiet by New York standards. However when a high level dignitary comes to town, it's not unusual to see the streets closed and lined with police and police dogs.
Top left picture you see the FDR Drive with the United Nations in the far distance.
Top right picture you see a side view of the United Nations building. In the distance to the right you see Tudor City which was constructed in 1925.
Center right picture is the Queensboro Bridge. This pretty bridge is viewable from the small parks at the end of the streets in Sutton Place.
Bottom right picture you see the Citicorp Building in the distance with the 'Lipstick' building towards the front. You'll notice that these very modern buildings are surrounded by very old structures. The Citicorp Building has lots of shopping and restaurants and the subway is right at the door.
